78-year old Lopez Group chair conquers yet another mountain
Lopez Group chairman Oscar M. Lopez, a known fitness enthusiast and wellness advocate, added another feather in his cap, conquering the summit of the country's highest mountain in early May 2008. Lopez scaled Mount Apo on May 3 at the age of 78, a fitting follow-up on his conquest of Luzon's highest peak, Mount Pulag, in 2007.

An Open Letter to PGMA from Oscar M. Lopez (4133 kb)
I am writing this open letter to you to express my full support to your desire to bring down power rates. In this regard, I have proposed that EVAT be removed and the royalties of Malampaya gas be waived or proceeds used to subsidize low income consumers and other preferred sectors such as export industries. Allow me to explain my proposals as well as to clarify some basic issues you have brought up in relation to Meralco, such as high electricity rates and what can be done about these rates.

Fellow shareholders, it is with pleasure that I report to you that all our subsidiary companies performed well in 2007, despite quite challenging circumstances. In the communications sector, our operating companies continued to hold their ground amid stiff competition in their respective industries. ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation continued to differentiate itself by providing multiple platforms for creative media content and its profits recovered by 71 percent to over a billion pesos in 2007. Bayan Telecommunications, Inc. played its maverick telecom role and led in the wireless local loop business with its innovative Bayan Wireless Landline. And Sky Cable Corporation, while pushing its signal encryption effort to reduce piracy and increase legal connections, finally turned the corner to reverse several years of losses with a modest net income of about a hundred million.

Good morning.
With much controversy and media interest, we conduct this year's stockholders' meeting. We thank you all for coming to show your interest and support to your Company.
The results of our operations for 2007 and major events in Meralco are already contained and comprehensively explained in the Information Statements distributed to all of you. Major performance indicators and issues are also highlighted in the Annual Reports made available today at the registration area. In his report immediately following, our President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Jesus Francisco will further enlighten you on our operational results and our financial statements for 2007.
